EDUCATION

The first school building of Van Buren Public Schools opened in 1827. Now, over 170 years later, the Van Buren Public School district is composed to six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school serving a population of over 6,000 students.

The 74-square-mile district’s population includes students from the City of Belleville and the Townships of Van Buren, Sumpter, Canton and Ypsilanti.

The Belleville area also has two parochial schools, St. Anthony Academy K-8 and Metro Baptist School K-12.

Post-secondary educational opportunities are available at the Western Campus of Wayne County Community College District located on Haggerty Road in Van Buren Township and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Wayne State University in Detroit.

In addition to the vocation opportunities offered through the Wayne County Community College District, The International Trucking School and The Michigan Institute of Aeronautics are located at Willow Run Airport.

The Fred C. Fischer Library, located in the City of Belleville, is part of the Wayne County Library System and serves the tri-community area. Named after a Superintendent of the Van Buren Schools the library is open Monday through Thursday from 12 Noon to 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 12 Noon to 5:00 p.m.

The library offers reading programs for children throughout the year and the very active Friends of the Fred C. Fischer Library hold used book sales and present programs for the public to meet authors and topical subjects. On two days each November the Library gives our local artists an opportunity to present their masterpieces through the Window on the Arts program. The Belleville Area Council for the Arts sponsors an Art Smart summer program at the library for area youth.
